BusinessWeek: 10 Commandments of Web Design

"BusinessWeek.com canvassed a broad range of Internet luminaries to discover the design rules they live by right now. Contributors ranged from the guru of Web usability, Don Norman, co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, to the design director of NYTimes.com, Khoi Vinh, and John Maeda, president-elect of the Rhode Island School of Design."

    1. Thou shalt not abuse Flash.

    2. Thou shalt not hide content.

    3. Thou shalt not clutter.

    4. Thou shalt not overuse glassy reflections.

    5. Thou shalt not name your Web 2.0 company with an unnecessary surplus or dearth of vowels.

    6. Thou shalt worship at the altar of typography.

    7. Thou shalt create immersive experiences.

    8. Thou shalt be social.

    9. Thou shalt embrace proven technologies.

    10. Thou shalt make content king.

Not a bad list, all pretty obvious though. However, I would like to be able to etch that in stone and beat some webmasters over the head with it

Agreed! x2! Should we round them up?

I'd also add the occasional client in there too. I have a client at the moment who wants me to create a site which only works with Flash. They keep insisting that it doesn't matter that non-flash users can't see their site since 95% of people have it anyway and they can't be bothered dealing with "idoits what cant put flash in ther explorer".

Meh, the first few commandments should imply obedience to supreme power, such as "Thou shalt not follow other standards but of W3C".

No 10 should be No1 and vice versa.
I agree. You can do whatever you wish on your site that they mention is this list but without content, a reason for people to be there and come back, who cares?

I think some of the things on their list only apply to certain businesses too. They're not general.

Their examples of "cutting edge" sites in typography puzzled me. Didn't look like anything special. They were both hard to read for me and the second site was stuffed with text as to be overwhelming.

While some of these seem reasonable, everybody can do things how they want! These stupid people don't have to tell others how to blog! And hiding content, what about for RSS only posts? They do not take everything into account, they are a bit careless and think to much of the way they do things.

Great list. But reading "Thou shalt" is really annoying and corny.

Those "commandments" are targeted towards web designers and developers, and not bloggers. Blogging is a totally separate niche.

I don't agree with this list. I've explained my thoughts on the SitePoint blogs.
I design beautiful, usable interfaces. Oh, and I wrote a kids' book.

Matt, you are right on. This sounds also like design by committee, which of course has never worked and never will. It also sounded desperate, like they needed to fill a slot in a short time.

The points are all valid points. It's just the context and the terming '10 commandments'.
