    Question User connection speeds

    Hello,

Does anyone know of any surveys that outline what percentage of surfers are using 28.8, 56, cable, DSL connections etc.?

    Thanks for the help

    AJ

Generic listings can be of some use if your site is targetted at a "global" audience, but if your audience is a little more "niche", and that could be by country, demographic type etc etc.

"Net Savvy" or techie types are likely to be the first in line for broadband, so if your site is targetted at them, and you are also focused on a country that has wide broadband access, you could begin to progress with that in mind.

However, if you believe the stats presented above (excellent link btw), 2.3% of UK surfers have broadband - designing purely for them alienates as many people as have flash on their machines (allegedly ).

I think the "standard" assumption at the mo should be that surfers are on 56k. Some will be on 28.8, some on 14.4, some on broader bands, but the majority worldwide are almost certainly still @ 56k - and in reality that is plenty for the purposes of most types of site at the moment - don't hog that bandwidth!!!

I plan on getting ADSL in the next few weeks (hooray!), but that connection will be used for surfing, downloading files, uploading files etc - I don't see it as an excuse for sites to use all the bandwidth available (which I'm sure isn't your intention anyway, just wanted to give my thoughts on the matter).

Essentially, I believe that even when broadband is almost globally available, sites should be designed as "slim" as possible.
