Hi Johnnybo, welcome to the forums,
Even a "simple" website can be a lot of work. But one good place to start learning is http://reference.sitepoint.com/

    Hi there,
I am no expert in site building either.
But, I found that using programs such as Frontpage or other WYSIWYG programs make it much easier!

    That's how I learned
^ and I'm yet to come across another site that explained things as straight-forward as this guy did.

Don't mean to sound harsh - but first of all learn to use punctuation. Seriously, you'll get better answers if you come across as professional.

Ok, so here is the order of things I learned to get to where I am:
    • XHTML - The markup language - Learn it, don't use programs to write it.
    • CSS - A designing language - You set spaces between elements, colors, fonts etc. Learn this before making any serious designs - using tables isn't good practice, space out <div>s instead.
    • JavaScript - To make the page more functional - JS can change elements within a page, for example move something, add text to something etc. If you feel inclined to put some JavaScript cursor on your page (e.g. a clock following the mouse) you've got it wrong - be professional.
    • PHP - This is the back end of the typical website. You write in a programming language, and it's mainly used to generate the HTML for a website.
    • SQL - For database connectivity
    • PHP in OOP - You'll need to learn this to get a real grasp with programming logic.
    • Java - optional, but if you learn it, you can make serious applications for the web world and the desktop application world.

It should take you a few years to master all of this.

Or... you could just try a wordpress site - there's lots of plugins to allow you to have various types of advert on the site plus a ton of different themes.

WordPress is good for getting a site up. But IMHO if you don't have a basic understanding of HTML and CSS you're going to have problems if you want to modify the site's design. And since it's built on PHP you should have some understanding of that as well. Not that you need to be an expert in everything, but if you don't understand what you're working with, you'll be learning as you go. To me it would be easier to learn in a less complex "hello world" type of page first, and then move on to something more complex (eg. a template site like WordPress).
