Question Canadian merchant account? Payment gateway? What to choose?

    Hi everyone,

I'm a Canadian graphic/web designer but have never done an e-commerce website.

I'm designing an E-commerce website for a client who is also in Canada. He will be selling mostly in Canada, but will also be selling outside Canada. My client would like to offer his visitors the possibility to pay either through Paypal or directly through credit-card payment.

Not knowing much about e-commerce, I've just learned that my client needs both merchant account and payment gateway.

I'm getting the back-end work done by a company overseas (found on Elance). They told me they can integrate PayPal regular, PayPal Pro, Google Checkout, and Authorize.net as payment processors... but they didn't mention anything about the merchant account. So I presume they expect my client to get something that's compatible with what they can integrate.

Now my client is about to go to the bank to open a merchant account...

    - Is there anything in particular they need to get at the bank?
    - What payment processor should they use?

    Thanks!

You'd only need a merchant account for authorize.net, which is a payment gateway and shopping cart system. The others you listed are third party payment processors, stand alone products, you're aggregating their merchant accounts.

Actually Authorize.Net is only a payment gateway. They are not a shopping cart provider.

Try PsiGate - (psigate.com) - whey provide everything you need for Canadian merchants. I use them and I'm happy.

Take a look at 2Checkout.com ... They provide Canadian accounts and they're similar to PayPal..
