    Question Newbie-IRB

On Page 57 (Chapter 3) of the free .PDF download Build Your Own Ruby On Rails, after opening the Ruby Console window, and go to type the first example on that page irb> 1 and hit enter, the =>1 does not come up. Instead the next line is a blinking line and no enter, or nothing works. I end up having to exit out of the console and having to restart the Ruby Console Window. When the return value doesn't come back for a newbie it can be a little bit defeating. Can someone please help me?

I may have misunderstood your post, but you were supposed to just type "1", not "irb> 1". If you still see the same error, then you should reinstall your Ruby.

Did you start irb by typing "irb' and hitting enter on the command line?

    thanks

I just took it to literally... ended up looking it up online and figured that out. After I type irb than enter I get irb(main):001:0).I love the Knight Rider example. I am churning away as we speak building shovell. This is one of the best books written on ROR, and I am so grateful that it was free.
Thank you two both for taking the time to answer my question. I had a really hard time posting that question, thought it may have been to elementary.
Phew!!! The Sitepoint community is very nice.

    Smile

I just came on the forum because I had done exactly the same thing!

It's great that people are so friendly on Sitepoint, on other forums they'd just laugh at us!
