sqlite setup error

Hi, I am trying to get started with sqlite and I get this error after I enter ./configure --prefix=/usr/local

checking for cc... no

checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Which operating system (and distribution, if Linux) are you using?

You need to install gcc and the C compiler in order to compile SQLite. In Ubuntu, you install the build-essentials package (with "sudo apt-get install build-essentials" or through Synaptic, or whichever package manager you're familiar with).

I am using Mac OS X 5. I thought it was supposed to be all set right out of the box...

You need the XCode developer tools to get the GCC compiler. You can install it from the OS X CD, or by downloading XCode from Apple's web site.
