I am trying to develop a catalog of a series of computer products on a friend's web sites. What cgi script should I use to create a catalog with categories like printers, scanners, laptop, etc.?
Is there any possiblity that I can include photo with the product info?
There's no simple answer to your question, petertan (at least none that I'm aware of). It definitely sounds like a database-driven solution would be the way to go.
What restrictions are there on the server this site has to run on? Is your friend hosting the site him or herself? If not, will the Web host support PHP/MySQL or ASP/SQL (two of the most commonly-supported script/database combinations)?
I know I always plug this script (I can't help it, I'm nuts about it!)...but is the text in the DB will be under 1MB, then go with DBMan...found at http://www.gossamer-threads.com.
Their support form CANNOT be beat. And it's run by people who are NOT even employed by the company! Three in particular (JPDeni, AnthroRules & LoisC) are quite knowledgeable and generous with their time.

There is a really good free shopping cart program available at http://www.i-shop.nu/ that is pretty easy to install. They have a great help forum, too. I use it on my site and have been pleased with its perfomance and ease to implement. After going through three or four other carts that either just wouldn't work or the setup instructions seemed to be missing something I stumbled on this one and wish I found it sooner . (no affiliation, just a satisfied customer). Good luck
