    free FTP question

What is the advantage to having an FTP that you pay for as opposed to one that is free?

It's personal preference, really, and advanced features.

Filezilla is pretty good, and so is the FireFTP Firefox extension.

But I normally use Transmit (on my Mac). It does cost but not much.

    FileZilla Rocks my world!

I have used a few others but if they try to authenticate too much and resulted in getting me banned from my own server!

Maybe a better question is: Does anyone pay for FTP software?

An even better question (at least for me) would be...

"Is there a free FTP program for Macs that lets you copy files from one server straight to another?"

It was really easy when I used Konqueror on Ubuntu Linux. I bought Transmit to achieve the same.

I think "Fetch" is what you need

Its beyond me why someone would want to pay for a ftp tool, while there are so many good free programs available. Its not like a payed version will upload your files faster or anything like that...

    Thanks for all replies!

Basically, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on anything by using a free one.

I really wanted to use Filezilla, but I can't configure it to my computer. I'm going to try to update my Windows service pack and try again.

Fetch costs money, too. I wish there was Konqueror for Mac. (I know there is KDE for Mac, but it looks a bit complicated.)

    I just downloaded Filezilla again.

A window pops up which says server address, port, and administration password.

I never had the option of registering a password with Filezilla, are they talking about my hosts password?

When I put in my hosts password I go to another window, and it says waiting for authorization, and then logged on, but that's a far as I go. Anyone know what I should do next?

EDIT: When I'm talking about my host's password, I mean the password they gave me to use on FTPs.

Yes, it's your host's details, including your FTP password.

This is as far as I'm getting on Filezilla. I get this text on a window with no options. Once it's "logged on" it's a dead end.
