Question The Richest country in the world...??

    Countries: Compare and contrast

The United States is the world's wealthiest country.
    Cambodia is very poor.
Germany is wealthier than we would have guessed.
Russia is poorer than we would have guessed.
Japan's wealth is amazing relative to the rest of Asia.
    Some countries have big wealth.
    Some countries have medium wealth.
    Most countries have little wealth.

    Continents: Compare and contrast
Three continents (North America, Europe, Asia) have big wealth.
Three continents (Australia, Africa, South America) have little wealth.
If it were not for Japan, Asia would not be nearly so wealthy as it is.
Western Europe (England, France, Germany, Italy) is much wealthier than Eastern Europe (Russia, Hungary, Modova).

Do you agree? .. what do you think? .. compare and contrast!

With the oil prices shooting up, the wealthiest nation on Earth must be one of those oil-producing middle eastern country. They are getting money on the truck load.

The cost of living is going up everywhere. It is oil-fuelled inflation that decision-makers and politicians have no answers for.

So one might think. However, there are just groups of people who are extremely wealthy in those countries, the diversification is minimal.

Now about oil prices, that is likely to change, I have a reason to think. I won't find the numbers now, but the demand for oil is decreasing rapidly, while the supply is increasing. Last/this year the demand was/is significantly lower than supply. Yet the prices keep going up. Give it some time and another bubble will burst, of course the interested will delay it as much as possible.

The whole debate is pretty irrelevant unless you define what 'rich' means. If you are defining it as GDP per capita that's very different then defining it in specific categories such as access to health care or education.

Statements like 'Russia is poorer than we would have guessed' are hard to quantify or even respond to. Russia is experiencing incredible wealth-building over the last few years, but not very good distribution of that wealth.

Statements like 'Usa has alot of credit now not so much money compared to what they owe other countries' aren't really clear - the USA has huge amounts of oustanding bonds, but as a percentage of the countries economy it's not all that bad. It's the trade deficit that concerns many economists as that kind of dynamic moves hard currency out of the country.

A website like this one: http://www.aneki.com/richest.html can give you some interesting GDP data, but there are so many differences in the way each country generates their GDP information (especially for oil exporting countries) that it's not always a universally reliable measure of wealth.

Another GDP based list is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...al)_per_capita

Adjusted for purchasing power, the list looks like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...%29_per_capita

There also lots of countries that have a healthy GDP but awful distribution of that wealth. Others that have terrible GDP but surprisingly good services for that money. And other countries who have a high GDP, but think they have terrible services because they are never satisfied!

Oil is nothing, we can replace oil through technology in the long run whoever controls the fresh water will be the wealthiest in the future.

it doesn't matter if you live in the wealthiest country if you don't even have good air to breath, good food to eat, clean water to drink and if you have a lot of stressed people to work for and with.

That again? Is it even remotely true?

    Historically, no: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._United_States

I know it's a 'feel-good' way to take a simplistic position against the US that many people will agree with in a knee-jerk way, but isn't this topic important enough to at least consider the viability of your claim?

What is your definition of wealth? As far as I know, Africa has the majority of natural resourses like minerals and .....well i think its wealthy if not to say the least....I probably miss the point but natural endowment of a region is a good enough basis to value its riches...thats as far as I know...forgive my ignorance..

I was under the impression that 'wealth' in this thread meant financial status as opposed to natural resources. When it comes to natural resources, my country, Suriname, is the 17th wealthiest country in the world. Economically, that's a different story. Because no matter how many natural resources a country possesses, it all goes to waste if not properly exploited. And certainly if it's a multinational profiting most and not the country itself.

This is my favourite resource for getting a few stats regarding different countries when I need them. As the most basic unit of comparison I would look at gross domestic product per capita although this will be distorted since small wealthy countries like Equatorial Guinea will come out tops.

Alot of interesting points in this thread...glad it's not really became a full fledge "debate" as these things tend to do...(debate used lightly)

The usa may be considered a power house, but the people never really see most of this...yes we live fairly well off compaired to others, however the US you are either extremely rich or extremely poor....very few are comfortably in the middle....those that are in the middle are simply living paycheck to paycheck!

Other places though their living standards compaired to the us may be substandard...their health care and education system is better...but then again most of the time it is abused by those in power....

as far as the us having a lot of credits....that could be said pretty much for every nation....
