I tried to check it but I guess you have gone to sleep. You probably won't see me online at the same time as you, I keep most unsociable hours.

I couldn't reach the server either. You should do as I do and leave the computer on 24/7. It really doesn't even drain that much power as long as you have the monitor in sleep mode.

    Exclamation

try anytime during the day (not 4am)
and it'll be online, the reason its not online at night is it has previously only been aimed at a few people (in my school) that are generally awake the same hours as me.
As the site is expanding i have looked around for decent hosting deals, but i love the control i have now
ah well... might just leave it on at night (noisy as it is).

    Thx. Vassago

Put it in another room or a closet, and then close the door to cut down on noise. Trust me, I've got eight fans in mine, so I know a bit about sound dampening.

Nothing seems too broken for me
(though the typography itself (and spelling) isn't going to win any awards)

Perhaps the centre div could come down a little as it's currently nudging the bottom of the top div.
Removing the padding (5px) will probably bring it back in line with the other columns (left, right)

The swf banner doesn't work, but then you seem to be calling two different swf files in the same object.

But anyway, it mostly appears as I imagine it should be

Can I remind people that this is the CSS forum and NOT Website Reviews.

Any comments should be aimed at the style-sheet, focusing on errors that may exist and how to correct them etc. Please do not post comments about the overall design of the site or the thread will be closed. Thank you.

If everyone who contributes is benefitting from it, what is the harm?

Is digression really so dire that it warrants shutting down someone else's thread?
Will the very fabric of society crumble?

    I doubt it.

Are you suggesting that I start a new thread reviewing someone else's site for the purpose of making a 30-word comment.
Or should I just leave all non-CSS-specific remarks/pointers unsaid?

    Who benefits then?

If you want to be pedantic about it, then I can at least justify most of my (few) comments by stating that the layout of the site in question is handled in CSS, so layout comments/errors would be perfectly fitting for this thread (and this area of the forum).

With all due respect, Saz, it seems a bit draconian (and most unlike you, I hasten to add).

It's not a case of being pedantic. It's a case of following the forum guidelines. In this community, in order to gain feedback about a website, members are required to review at least 3 other sites first. If vassago is permitted to get feedback on his design here, purely because the layout is governed by CSS, then it's hardly fair on the many members we have denied reviews for because they've submitted to the correct forum but haven't completed any reviews of their own.

Any comments made here by any member should and will be restricted to the style sheet as I stated before, focusing on possible errors, and NOT how changes to the style sheet can make the site more appealing.

Basically, if the CSS is correct, no comments are necessary. That's all there is to it.

This may sound harsh, but it's my job to make sure that members stick to the guidelines, and I can assure you, that's all I'm doing.

All well and good, but then...

Why don't the powers that be just take out all the posts for CSS and just have one thread pointing to the CSS validator at W3C?

My apologies to the rules, regulations, admins and members that I may have offended, but I would have thought the forum uses 'guidelines' for their flexibility as opposed to rigid, not-up-for-discussion laws.

If laws are what we've got here, why euphemise?

I'll be sure to ask posters if they have made the mandatory 3 reviews before venturing to make a comment about their site in future.

Sorry, but it all sounds a bit 'job'sworth' to me.
I really don't think this thread was worth making an issue out of.

The issue isn't that "we want rules" but that without the rules and regulations that we currently have there have rashes of abuses.

In fact, of all the reviews that are submitted, only 20-30% actually get approved even with the current system in place.

If we were to lift the rules and regulations in this area you would have a whole list of people running in here to get their site reviewed when really the forum is for CSS help and that doesn't help anyone.

I still wouldn't consider my comments as coming that close to a website review that an admin needed to come in and throw their weight around in such a way (esp. given that so little of my post was unrelated to css)

What is it they say abouty 'catching bees'?
All I'm saying is that a little diplomacy wouldn't go amiss.

But anyway, I'm having a funny day, so ignore me (...some more)

I think it was more a clarifying then a coming down on you, and I'm sorry you see it as such.

Nobody "swings their weight around" here, it wouldn't be tolerated. She was showing you the guidelines both for yourself and so that others would know, as opposed to slamming you.

    Have a happy/fun day

Bill, my comments were to serve as a general reminder that this is not the website reviews forum and, as Jeremy said, was not meant to slam you personally.

We've had threads before where one or two members have made a few comments about the design of a site while helping a member solve a problem, and the next minute, the thread is full of people posting their own feedback. This, coupled with the fact that vassago actually invited 'constructive criticsm' could have meant the whole thread turned the wrong way. Rather than allow it to get to the point where the thread needed either closing or removing completely, I felt a 'reminder' was more appropriate. This is something I've done several times in the past and none of those threads turned into debates about our guidelines.

If you want to talk about CSS then this is the place.

If you want to talk about the Guidelines then visit the feedback forum.

If you disagree with the guidelines that much you can email me personally. However they were built up over time following the needs of the community. They do change over time though.

I am sorry this got off the track of the original topic and I will copy that thread anew to help that person.
