    Hi,

I've heard a bit about BigTalker (the Bulletin Board Software) being sort of "pirated" from UBB...is that true?

From what I can gather it seems that the creator of BigTalker had a falling out with some of the UBB people and has since taken the UBB code, changed it around a bit, and is now calling it his own...is this all accurate? Any kind of evidence?

I ask because BigTalker will fulfill my message board needs for less cash than UBB, but if what I've heard is true I wouldn't feel right about using it.

    adamfletch,

I've read those already actually, which is what prompted me to post this new topic. I'm unsure whether these people are stating opinion or fact when talking about BigTalker...

Oh by the way, do you know where I can find a solid, reliable JavaScript preloading script (for mouseover images)? We discussed this a bit before I believe in another thread

    Hi,

I think the posts were a cross between opinion and fact. Joseph did have a fallout with UBB and it was this that prompted him to make his own BBS. I think yes it is very similar to UBB but the reason for this is that he listens to what people want in the forums at http://www.bigtalker.com and most of them want a free version of UBB which isn't really suprising.

He is going off into different areas though as he is currently making a SQL version and he is also adding little features that UBB hasn't like polls in posts and spell checks.

About you pre-loading script I completly forgot about it sorry. I have decided that the ones I was using were slow and extremly long. If I find a better one I will let you know.

    adamfletch,

No need to apologize, was just wondering!

Thanks for the info on BigTalker...overall it looks like a good script to me...a bit cheaper than vBulletin and UBB as well.

Keep in mind that the creator was selling his bigtalker with the UBB images and exact wording, not to mention the "UBB FRIEND" image with exact wording, and many other *similarities*.

He since has obviously re-wrote many things, but it was pretty blatent when he started out. That is not my opinion, I saw it with my own eyes, and it said "UBB" all over it, so there is no way it was an opinion.

Check out http://www.sausage.com/island/tutori...ouseover.shtml . It's a good tutorial on mouseovers and also covers preloading of images!

    Hi,

Sorry for reopening and pretty much dead thread but I have some news on bigtalker that may interest some of you. Joseph Bannon has gone AWOL from the company and someone else has took over the control of IndexFinger another of their scripts but there was no mention of Bigtalker so if Joseph doesn't come back it may be the end of bigtalker. Of course this is only rumours as he could have just gone away for a few days without telling anyone.
