The buttons themselves seem very 90s, but some nice principles outlined there.

Nice tutorial, especially like the idea of adding noise to the button to give a subtle texture.

There are some nice techniques there. I especially like the glossy metallic buttons on the last page. I would like see it done on something other than a grey shade, however. I'll give it a shot.

The buttons look like they have been created by an amateur. Anyone who had been using Photoshop for more than a day could create a better set of buttons. After seeing this tutorial I will not be downloading the book, even if it is free. Sitepoint seem to be pushing boundaries in all other aspects of Web Design/Development, it’s a shame the Photoshop expert does meet this standard.

The buttons are definitely lame by today's standards. The article does show some fundamental techniques for button making in great detail though. Way too much detail on hex colors for those boring gradients and not enough cool effects & techniques to actually make a "beautiful button".

Maybe Part II will amaze us.

That was pretty useful. As a relative photoshop novice, I learned a couple of techniques I hadn't come across before. Like Tekime, though, I thought the buttons looked pretty dated.

Apart from the effort and the fine style of this article, all of these buttons have too much of a "mid-nineties-gradient-extravaganza" feeling as far as I'm concerned.

This is more for people just starting their homepage on a free geocities host, circa 1994...

You guys take your Photoshop skills for granted. We all started somewhere -- this article is a good intro for someone new to UI design with Photoshop. It teaches them a few techniques that will hold them well when they go on to create the more advanced and modern effects that you're obviously used to pumping out.

I think it should also stress the details in the button-design, even if it's a beginners tutorial. It's important to learn how to refine and make the little details.

Good for me as a beginning- beginning- beginner but if it is really an introductory tutorial a few more images and broken down steps would have been nice as I found myself unable to find tools, then the settings I made kept applying themselves to other things, etc, and I didn't know how to "officially" fix them. Overall though, I was able to create the products so it was a success.
