    Media Heaven - what do you think?

    Hi everyone.
    Please have a look at my site: http://www.mediaheaven.co.uk
    We are planning to redesign this site in about 2-3 months. Our feedback has suggested that the navigation of the site is difficult for many visitors so we are going to change that. My main question is: what do you think of the cartoon pics that we have throughout the site? Do they make us look unprofessional? All of our competitors use stock photographs with people holding CDs and smiling or listening to music (if they bother to use decent graphics). We wanted to stand out. Is there anything else on the site that should be changed? Thanks.

    Your header is too big and cartoon looking. The rollover content is not very good either and the navigation is limited. I would recommend a complete redesign. What is that big number on the bottom? Everything is just a bit to big as well. Go to some open source template sites to get some ideas of designs.

    Hi CraigBuilder
    As I mentioned in my post, we are doing a complete redesign and we know the navigation needs to be changed. What big number are you referring to? Our telephone number?

    if you want to stand out then this will do it, but you have to be careful as to how you come across to your potential clients.

    What i've noticed is that you graphic for the content box, at the bottom doesn't align properly when the page first loads (in FF). However once you hover over the links it aligns itself.

    Also when you go into the pages the 'quotation' link at the bottom left is covered by the content box.

    But i look forward to seeing the redesign.

    I have the same problem a nodster, the quotation link is half covered by the content.
    your bread crumbs are nearly unreadable (at least on my laptop)
    also I have a problem with the navigation. once i go deeper into the site the nice and simple CD / DVD ... get replaced with the more defined options. - this is not a huge issue, but then you should have a header over each new navi box.

    Hi troi21. Honestly I've got to say that it is hard to take seriously a website that is business oriented but in the cartoon/stock photo format. The header is way to big. I think the site is on a scale of 1 to ten a 6. Also I think the animation link at the bottom of the page isn't working. Not a bad site just not able to hold attention. I think a nice WP template site would work better.

    So the general consensus is that the cartoon pics make the site look unprofessional? The navigation will definitely be sorted including the "quote" and "animation" links that are obscured. Any other feedback?

    troi,

    what age of customer is the site aimed at?

    answer this and you will have an idea of the graphics you should use. That being said just because other sites don't have graphics like that - there is no reason why your can't.

    I honestly think that there is too much use of templates - more sites look like each other so you lose the individuality of your 'online presence'.

    So basically, go with what you feel is right and what you think works for your demographic.

    Site

    I should have said custom template. Sitepoint has so many talented artists here. I've purchased many templates and they are all unique. The content of your site is all there, just needs a little different packaging.

    I think the navigation should be on the left side...most of westerners are reading from left and I guess that's the target, right?

    And yes, the header is too big...the users have to scroll down to see more content...they are not coming to your site to admire the big header but to find info about your product and eventually order. It's an e-commerce site, right?

    @Nodster
    We sell mainly to businesses so there isn't any target age group. We felt that the cartoon pics were fun and no-one else in our niche had done anything similar. Although we haven't had any bad feedback on the pics, I am wondering whether the mix of professional product photos and the cartoons is a good idea.

    @mg1313
    Do you really think that right navigation is not a good idea? So many blogs have right navigation now that I think people are getting used to it.

    Any other feedback on the site: good or bad?

    hey there, I like the layout.

    feew thing off the top that stood out for me at first glance

    the flat grey bg color has to go,

    you also have some weirdness at the bottom of your main-content, the bottom -image is repeating.

    and i think if both the logo and main content nav would look a lot better if they were all the same width.

    I like the design, it's original and simple at the same time. I would not change a thing. Great work!

    i really don't like the content changing with a :hover. At least make it OnMousePress.

    furthermore, i really dislike your lack of an overall - navigation bar. The site is changing too much for every page. imo.

    Still stock photos of a receptionist on amarok and magellan has the ubiquitous woman listening to music as does duplium.com. Our navigation wil change. We are working on that now.

    I think the pictures you have used all over the site are ok, but frankly speaking I prefer more serious images.
