Yeah, i also think google's kwd tool is not that good. It shows pretty shortend results(
I tried keyword spy, then switched to Serpanalytics tool. they seem to be intelligent enough.
I found many useful related keywords for my main organic queries.

I have a question. When I set up my site I targeted a phrase that the overture keyword tool reported is being searched 250K times a month (I used the right plural and singular form). I would expect that when I reach the first page in Yahoo for that search term I would get some of that massive traffic. I now rank as #9 on the first page and almost no hits from yahoo... With 8K reported queries a day I would expect hundreds of hits a day.
Any idea why yahoo hits are so low? How way off can the overture tool be?

Extremely way off, as far as I know it hasn't been updated in two years, I didn't know it was still working.

One of the best strategies for doing seo of a site is to opt for keyword analysis i.e. choosing good specific keywords relevant to a site. one could also use available online tools for this purpose like wordtracker, market samurai, google adwords keyword tool, etc.

I work for an SEO Agency and we use SpyFu. It's very accurate and it reports all your top 50 rankings, terms and search traffic. It will even give you a good estimate of how much PPC your competitors are spending.

Its a great starting point for my research because it compares my domains with competitors and gives me nice charts so I can get a good overview and direction to take.
