    Linux and MySQL?!?

aurg, so frusterating... here goes... I have apache, php, perl, and every other thing u can dream of on my server... i'm running Linux Mandrake 8.2... i compiled the 3.23 source (./configure, make, make install)... so it takes 20 mins (seemed like it, it wus about 5) to compile... 2hrs passed of me figuring out stuff n tryin to get it to work -- no success... i tried reading the manual -- no success... i can't start mysql... it tells me to check for any running instances of mysqld on /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock or something... i'm not sure if any are... please, please, please help... I need to know how to get this thing running...

Edit: Was googling for "Clete2" and this was second on the results. Just to let you know, this was typed long ago and I cannot stand the "u, wus, etc." style, nor have I been able to, for a while now.

3.23 source of what? Do you mean Apache 1.3.23?

Instead of installing Apache manually, I suggest you use Apachetoolbox. It's a TON easier.

For MySQL, follow Kevin's tutorial on SitePoint. Just search for MySQL and you will get it back as a result.

ok, I used ps -ax... it doesn't seem to be running... i tried to run it and it said: "[clete2@localhost mysql]$ bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysqlusr
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/var
rm: cannot unlink `/tmp/mysql.sock': Operation not permitted
    020327 22:38:13 mysqld ended
    "

EDIT: I deleted that file w/ root premissions... now when i run it it says its starting but i can't connect... any ideas? please...
