    RackShack and Virtual Hosting Questions.

What does everyone think of Rackshacks hosting quality and features ?

Can I use Virtual Hosting on there servers? How do i set this up.

My idea of what virtual hosting is: Virtual Hosting is where you can host many domains and sites on the same ip address. Is this correct ?

    Thx Sitepointers

    Hi Kaizen,
I think you can edit your original post, so you don't have to post three question in a row .

You can also try your questions at the Rackshack Forums. As far as I know they are sold out on most of their packages.

I just checked RackShack's prices and they are pretty competitive. One thing you want to make sure of though is whether or not it is a MANAGED server. If you have to install all the patches and updates you will forever be sitting at the telnet screen!

Also, does it include a tape backup? How often is it backed up?

One host I can recommend is DialTone (www.dialtone.com) - ALL they do is dedicated hosting and they have two of their OWN datacenters. It's a little more expensive for managed hosting, but then again you don't have to worry about your sites getting hacked or your sever crashing. You'll always have an up to date OS and backups ready to reinstall!

Beley is right, the rackshack servers are not managed hosting in any way, shape or form. We talked to a few techs and it seems most are only trained for basic stuff and how to use the restore CD on a server.

Virtual hosting is not what you think it is either.

Virtual Hosting is mydomain.com virtually hosted by somebighost.com.

Dedicated hosting is where you own the server and you can host unlimited sites.

I have a dedicated at Dialtone - their support is very good but want to charge you for any work they do (which is understandable). The first 30 days are free too support wise ... They reformatted my server for me once.

But if you've never seen linux before it will be a hard step.

I just bought a dedicated server at RackShack.

Why? Price. They blow the competition away.

They don't backup the server for you, thats your job. But I'm pretty sure they handle any patches etc for the software that comes installed with the machine. I read that somewhere anyways though I can no longer find where.

40 gb disk space and 400 gb transfer for $99 I don't care if I have to admin the server more than normal - I always planned to do some server customizing anyways and if I don't know how to do certain things yet then I'll consider it a learning experience.
