Mac OS X and form drop-down menus

I have recently made the move to Mac OS X and have used several browsers (IE, OmniWeb, Opera, Mozilla, Chimera).

When I apply a style to a form for a drop-down menu, my style applies until the menu is clicked. Then the OS takes over and displays in its HUGE font and changes the drop-down to its own transparent color. This can be a problem for value lists that contain a large number of items and it doens't look the way I want!

Does anyone know how to overcome this irritating OS X plague?

    It's not just OS-X.

All browsers that I've seen leave the operating system to draw drop-down lists on the screen. I think that's why CSS doesn't affect them much. Sorry, I don't have a fix for that.

But you could use an alternative (DHTML or Flash, for instance) there by circumventing the OS. That'll give you the most flexibility over your designs at a cost of making the list inaccessible to those with it off. That's really about all I can think of, and, for me at least, it probably wouldn't be worth it.
