Tips for learning/studying?

I'm brand new to the server side programming and other dryer elements of web development but I've gotten a few books and such to learn Javascript, PHP, among other things. Only problem is I'm not quite sure how to learn it - any tips for studying/learning such things? Maybe write down little tables or something? I have no clue, I just know reading it obviously isn't enough.

Hey, for starters JavaScript is client-side.

My technique has been buying a decent book, taking notes and experimenting with the things I learnt after each chapter. It hasn't let me down yet.

Let's see.. currently I'm..

a) reading from various books (mostly definitive version, sometimes ecma 262)
b) asking questions on forums and answering other peoples questions if i can
c) doing the same thing above except on IRC
d) taking notes when i need to
e) playing around on every page i visit, randomly creating custom code/scripts/functions
