mailto: links work with web mail

I know that emailto:johndoe@domain.com will open a new mail message if the person clicking on the link has a local email client (Outlook, outlook express etc), but how to I get it to work for the people that use a webmail service like yahoo, gmail, and hotmail?

I think this is a setting the user selects on their end. I know I did anyway, when I click a mailto link it opens gmail for me.

mailto uses the computers default email program on the users end. You may need to setup some sort of form to do contacts.

Start > Default programs > Set program access and defaults > Custom > Email is where you can set defaults.

I use gmail manager it offers some options to allow for this.

Yes, it's a user setting. Have you considered a contact form on your page instead of a mailto link? It might be more friendly.

I don't have an email program on the computer I use for web access so mailto: links are just a waste of space as far as I am concerned. Such links are only there to allow spammers to add the address to their list of who to send spam to. If you want real visitors to contact you, you'll provide a contact form.
