I take mine whenever I go somewhere non-routine.

So I would take it with me on weekends, parties, dinners, holidays etc, but not going to the shops for bread and milk.

I wish I could!... But it's too big and heavy to trudge around with all the time. Plus crime over here is pretty bad and I spent way too much money on the cam and lenses to risk losing it (I don't have a car so I'm usually walking though some rough areas at all hours of the night).

Would have been nice to have a portable camera... like a Coolpix or something, but I don't need it yet.

    HAHAHA

    I have the same problem!

You have no idea how long I've been scouting around for a camera-bag that doesn't look like the typical laptop bag (AKA... the henny-penny "man-purse").

In the meantime I got this cool, rugged-looking Nike sportsbag that I keep all my equiptment in.

For stability I have the lenses in their original boxes (with the styrotex) and the camera itself wrapped up in an old cloth sac I had, then placed inside the sportsbag.

There are endless compartments for USB and wires, batteries, memory cards, etc.

The cool thing too, is that it doesn't LOOK like a camera when I have everything put away. So less need to worry about pick-pockets at the airport or otherwise when travelling.

The only downside is the time taken to deploy. If a scene happens infront of me, it takes a couple minutes for me to un-wrap and assemble everything... Whereas with a real camera-bag, you can keep the cam with lens assembled and stored safely, to deploy at the rip of a velcro-seam.

I have a mobile too of 5 Mega Pixel and have another camera with much more than that so I think, if I needed quality shots, I use my manual camera as well.

My Canon SLRs stay home unless I plan on taking pictures but my Canon S5 is with me more of the time. I love the Canon S5! For the price... it can't be beat.

I really should take my camera everywhere, but I tend to only bring it when I know I've got something to shoot.

Even leaving aside the camera on my phone, I keep my little camera in my bag at all times - been handy for the occasional impulse shot, and I've even used it as a sort of fax machine in an emergency - take a pic of the docs then email them.

If you plan to take your camera while travelling, you might want to put it in a Titan Koffer or Rimowa koffer bags, they have stylish bags suitable for cameras especially SLRs.

I have a fujifilm f11 that I often have in the pocket, for a compact it has great facilities (manual/aperture/shutter priority) plus 6mp on a fairly large sensor for a small camera (good high iso performance). It's a shame that the megapixel race means there isn't really a compact of this quality available now (stuffing more pixels into a smaller are != more quality particularly once the iso gets ramped up) though the panasonic LX3 looks interesting (haven't tried it yet but the LX2 was too noisy to consider).

In the time I used to shoot a lot with my compact LC-A, I had it all the time with me for snapshots.
But now with a SLR, no.
