Ok, so I did some freelance work for a total of $300. They say that in order for them to send me a check, they need my Social security number? I've never had anyone request my SSN.

It's for tax purposes. Especially if they pay you at least $600.00 over the course of the year. You're going to want to fill out Form W-9 and mail it to them (them being the client).

If you don't want to give your SSN then apply for an EIN (Employer Identification number) and use that instead.
