Problem installing php5

I am relatively new to web based development. I recently installed ubuntu 7.10, and apache2. Both installed with no problems. In my browser i am able to type localhost, and i recieve the "It works" page. I can also start,stop and restart with no problems. However, I cannot install php5. I use synaptic package manager to install, and i added the appropriate lines to the httpd.conf file but i still cannot view .php files. I try to run a simple php page and a dialog box pops up prompting me to open or save the file. If i choose either, the box just pops up again. What did i do wrong?

That would tell me that it's not installed properly or the handlers are missing.

Do you mean post a screen shot of files contained w/in? or do you mean post the contents of every file in the mods-enabled file w/ a .load or .conf ext?

Sorry, didnt realize that OS produced so many seperate files, lets just do this.

type this command in while in a shell:
httpd -l

Lets find out what modules you have loaded at this point.

From the looks of it your logged in as mike and that is the reason for the bash error and cmd not found, su over to root

I am not an ubuntu person but I believe /etc/apache2/conf.d/php.conf is where it stores the configuration (I could be wrong)

ls -al /etc/apache2/conf.d/php.conf would help, you can also apt-get php again to ensure it's installed.

FYI, on Ubuntu, the command is apache2 not httpd.

so type this instead:

apache2 -l

Ok here are the installed modules:
root@mike-laptop:~# apache2 -l

However if i apt-get installl php5 it tells me the most recent version is currently installed(or something to that effect). So php5 is installed, apache apparently has no clue though.
Where do I go from here?

Do you have libapache2-mod-php5 installed?

Run this:

apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5 php5-mysql php

It will install the modules that aren't already installed.
