How do you write your code?

Actually, I'm interested in what editors do you guys use to write your PHP code?

I started with Notepad2 but moved to Notepad++ where I'm stuck today.

I tried a lot of editors around and still haven't found the right one.

In Notepad++ I miss things like code browsing/ completion, XHTML enclosing etc.

PHP Designer is really cool, but misses quote escaping (like \") and duplicate line (something I can't work without).

Rapid PHP looks nice but isn't really for serious people. It does feature a nice XHMLT / CSS capabilities.

Zend has a great code browser, but misses everything else

Why am I bringing this up? Microsoft has spoiled me

Recently I installed Visual Web Developer and man, I love it. Especially smart code intending (I love styled code).

I even downloaded Notepad++ src and started messing with it in hope to modify it to my needs (will keep you posted).

So, what do you use and how do you feel on this subject?

I use textmate... its only for mac, but it is awesome. Really powerful and easily configurable to your coding style.

I was introduced to it about 2 years ago when I was still using Dreamweaver as my editor... lol I was reluctant to make the change, but what a difference.. the quick keys and tab completion helps me really burn through large projects.

I'm still using Macromedia HomeSite v5. Started with it over 7 years ago (I think), and stuck with it. Clean, simple, easy to use and allows for quick development.

i use dreamweaver because i like the built-in FTP functionality. I wish someone else could replicate this functionality in a better, less-bloated editor.

SciTE, because it loads really fast and it looks nice (whereas Notepad++, which uses the same editing component, doesn't). I might switch some day though, because SciTE really is feature-less.

I've used PHP Designer. It took forever to start up (at least back then), and all the versions were also buggy. I could do a thousand things to get it to crash. It looked really nice though. :P

As for PsPad, it freezes for a few seconds when it starts up for me. Coupled with the fact that doesn't boot up right away, I'm not a fan of it.

I'm still looking for a nice looking IDE that's fast. I haven't found one to my liking yet.

I'm still looking for a nice looking IDE that's fast. I haven't found one to my liking yet.

Yeah, I saw some collegues that work with JAVA using this cool IDE, with tons of features, code completion,ecc. I tried Dev-PHP, but I found a bug in the class viewer after about 2 minutes

I use Zend Studio for Eclipse, really good mostly i like it because it has the auto completion and some easier ways to document your code.

Don't leave! SciTE doesn't get as much love around here as it should.

It's fast, elegant and does what's necessary.

Anyone care to compare Coda to Textmate? Coda looks awesome, I have used TM for about 2 years... always felt it was inconvenient to not have a ftp or ssh built in...

I haven't really used Textmate. I'm downloading the trial now.

One thing that I love about coda (and found out BBedit does this too), is you can split the window and view the same file in two different locations. so if you're typing out some code on line 1 that's similar to some code on line 1000, you don't have to scroll around or anything. Any modifications you make to the file in one window will appear in the second window as well. there's also bonjour code sharing..you could have (i think) up to 4 people working on the same file and the changes made will reflect on everyones screen.

Komodo IDE handles almost every language out there and supports the major ones as well. Python, Perl, PHP, Ruby, HTML, CSS, JavaScript.

I like it been using it for a month now. few little snags here and there but nothing is perfect. It opens quickly but takes a couple of seconds to be fully up and running but once it is very quick.

For a none IDE I use EditPlus now in version 3. I can never remove that editor from my computer one of the best around.

Yeah, textmate just found its way to the trash can.

Coda has built in FTP, SSH, even books..you can click a book for instant references to HTML, JS, CSS, and PHP...which is nice.

FTP/Terminal are the features I am really interested in. Textmate is super fast, but lacks some bells and whistles... has subversion built in though which is nice.

I am going to try out CODA for a while... see if it makes me a believer.

Textpad 4.0 FTW

I really like TextPad and I have been using it exclusively for years. I keep it on my jump drive just in case I have to do anything on someone else's computer. I wish that I could disable splash screen at startup, but that's about my only real complaint. A couple features would be nice (like ftp, better backup/archiving, debugging, tag completion, etc.), but I'm very content with it as is.
