(I've been smoking for 14 years now...and while the thought of quitting has crossed my mind, even more so recently after basically almost everybody around me quit and the prices increased yet again, but I didn't get my head around to it yet...and the only way for me to quit would be to go cold turkey, too...hmm...maybe I can use your example as inspiration...we'll see)

The price hikes certainly helped me to consider stopping but it is definitely the mindset that YOU WANT to quit.

Go for it Ingo, the first few days are hard - day 3 is very hard but I assure you that it gets easier after about a week.

I feel tons better for giving up (prepare yourself for a bit of weight gain though!)

Seeing as this thread was referenced recently I figure an update is in order!

Well so far I have been smoke free for 290 days or 9 months, 15 days including today!

So I can now call myself a non-smoker
I have also save around £1600 and feel a whole lot better.

So there we have it, I QUIT!

The NHS should market quitting as one of the "credit crunch busting" techniques that irritatingly keep cropping up all over the place. I bet there are enough people out there who'd stop for that reason alone.
