MY SQL Install

I cannot start MySQL that I installed on my Windows XP Pro Computer. Everytime I do a net start mysql then mysql root -p it kicks me back to the 'dos' prompt... I know I am propably doing something wrong since I am a beginner can anyone help??

Or it gives me a ERROR: 2003 cannot find localhost

Shouldn't it be:

mysql -u root -p
