I thought that that is what would come up as a question, but no

This thing is quite far removed from our lifestyle these days (little hint there).

Andy -- you built a super heater for your porch, it runs on diesel and hums along sputtering out exhaust through this pipe with holes in it, so you can sit there in middle of winter and sunbathe

No It is held close to you when you use it. I do sometimes, it has a nice feel to it.

Andy, I still do not get this thing. What is it? Do you gaze at the stars with it? Do you shoot the moon with it?

    Dat,
You can shoot almost anything BUT the moon with this.
It is a serious automatic weapon.

    ro0bear,
I am very naive about guns, but, doesn't the ".30 caliber" mean the projectile is 3mm in diameter?

No -- it is a pretty precise instrument and was used when dressed up nice.

Hmm, I have so little knowledge about weapons, you could tell me all sorts of things and I would not know if it is right or wrong. It does look mighty powerful. Why does it have these holes in the "pipe", I know, wrong term, but I just do not know better.

hahahaha haha that is funny Andy. I did say that I use it sometimes, so do you think I would wear something that needs twisting Just the thought of that makes me cringe.

No, it is something the ladies and gentlemen used when they went to these events where one needed one of those.

When the weapon shoots lots of bullets, the barrel gets very hot, the "pipe" with holes in around the barrel is used to cool the barrel. When the air inside the "pipe" gets hot, it expands and comes out the holes, then the low preasure pulls cold air in, that helps cool the barrel down.

(if the barrel gets too hot, bullets can go off from the heat)

Ive given up guessing the strange brass thing, no idea...

ro0bear -- Thanks for the explanation of the gun barrel and the why.

Ok, here is the big revelation of the mysterious thing. It is an opera glass, clad in mother of pearl. I use it sometimes to look at birds in the garden. A nice little pair of binoculars.

I got one of those long telescopes too, hard to see, you have to hold it still. I do not know how the old sailors did that on a ship.

Ok, since we are all out of images to guess, I throw in another one.
