A Question on Wordpress Permalink Options

    Hi Friends,

What do you think is the best Wordpress Permalink option? A permalink that serves best for SEO purposes.

Should the Wordpress permalink contain date? Or just the custom title?

    Thanks for sharing your opinion.

I think it should use the date myself.

As per SEO experts consensus I read it is advisable to use /%postname%/

For me, category with postname is the best. Here is the example: /%category%/%postname%/

I see no point in adding the date to a permalink.

If someone wants to know when the post was published they can visit the link. Otherwise the most descriptive permalink is best IMO. This tends to be /&postname%/ as suggested above.

It actually depends on the purpose of the blog in question. If you're running a newspaper style blog, then the date structure would probably be appropriate. If you're going with a magazine style blog then you might want to use it, though it could also be done using the category and post name structures (like articles/post-name/ for instance). Otherwise, I'd just go with the custom permalink option.

Yet you have the date in your URLs: http://ryanhellyer.net/2008/03/14/simplecms_theme/

Yes, there is a certain irony in that :P

I set up that blog before I realised how the WordPress permalink system worked. Some day I might convert them. But I'm not too worried about the SEO'ness of that site, it's just my personal blog.

I have made a few sites without the date added to the permalink myself so I guess I have no room to talk, but I was just messing with you anyway.

I use the postname and the post id as well, with no date. Just in case I repeat the exact same title twice, I think it's safer to have the id in there as well.

/%postname%/ or sometimes with id if titles are likely to be similar and sometimes with categories if they are short and keyword relevant

I haven't considered this to be a problem as WordPress appends a number to identical post url's by default anyway.

    I do use /%postname%/

But is adding categories relevant or not on a SEO point of view?

Depends on the categories you're using. Me, personally? I like to organize things so people and search engines know where to find them.

    ryanhellyer - thanks I didn't know that

As to category seo - think in terms of what it adds versus the longer link. If having a category so your url shows
    /mygolfsite.com/golf clothing/Ladies Shoes
then it helps. If your category reads
    /mygolfsite.com/golfing_accessories/golfing-accessories-for-ladies
you may gain little benefit from it due to repetition and have very long urls.

It's your call. Depends on the situation. Who's to say that repetition is bad? What is considered bad seo is unfocused categorization. mygolfsite.com/miscellaneous/today-it-rained-and-my-feet-got-wet
