    Customize GMail?

    Hi all,

I have a desire to alter the appearance of GMail. I see on
userscripts.org that a great many people have skinned GMail and I am
trying to figure out how. I've tried the instructions that everyone
seems to swear by here: http://blog.persistent.info/2004/10/...tylesheet.html...

But that does nothing. If it's as simple as styling with CSS, can
anyone help me learn where all the files are and what needs to be
    edited?

    Thanks!

    Chris

If that site is correct (I couldn't test because the extension won't work with FF2.0), then it's as simple as editing the styles in usercontent.css.

That's what it seems, but I downloaded that file and nothing changed at all. I would manipulate from there if I saw any evidence that it would do anything, but I don't.

Anyone else have any ideas? I don't know why, but this is really bugging me! :-)

It greatly depends on which version of GMail you are using. At present, this depends on your language selection. US English allows you to use the newer version but British English annoyingly doesn't.

With the older version of Gmail you can just use class names, etc. from what you can see when you view the source. With the newer version this is incredibly difficult and Google have nicely provided an API to help modding Gmail easier. I've used it and it's very good, though you still have to do a lot of trial-and-erroring to find anything lower down in the DOM than the few elements the API allows you to get references for.

Very cool, thanks. That helps a lot.
