I spend much more time on the internet. Tv needs to advance really... I want to be able to watch WHATEVER I want WHENEVER I want. Some services are close to this but every tv should have them.

We are not getting a fair sample of the population. Of course everyone on Sitepoint spends more time on the web than watching TV. We have to ask the average Joe.

Because of the nature of my job, i personally spend more time on net, but the rest of my family and friends i think they still spend on time on T.v.
so where i am today, i will to most people around me, T.V is still more popular.

I perfer the internet, because there are too many TV advertisements in between the program, that is a waste of time. When it comes to the Internet, I can choose what I watch, what I read and when to do that.

It's an interesting one. I'm a bad test case, as I ditched my TV a good 7 years ago and never looked back (love movies, but never watch "normal" telly unless I'm at a friends house). Given that and my job, the internet has been faaaar more popular with me for years.

I bought my daughter her first laptop recently - and while I'd say it was probably 50/50 before that, she now definitely uses the internet (if you include im services etc) far more than TV. Which brings up another interesting question..... Has the internet also killed hit phone companies quite hard?

Being the fossil that II am, I can recall endless complaints from all my friends parents that everyone was on the phone far too often! "You spoke to such and such just a few hours ago - why on earth do you need to call them??!!".....

I never watch television (and I do mean never - I don't even have the antenna cable connected to my TV). I don't remember anything good being on from when I did, and I never miss it. I do have a lot of DVDs, though, which allows me to watch what I want, when I want.

Theres 2 things I dont really do much with these days...

    1. Television. Im lucky to watch an hour a week, and havent done so in probably 8 years.

    2. Radio. Continually surfing between channels trying to find a decent song only to be subjected to "icey cold coke" morons and commercials.

There was a song "video killed the radio star" by Buggles. I think within the next 20 years it may be "internet killed the television star"

Actually, someone did a spoof on Video Killed the Radio Star a year or two ago, called Internet Killed the Video Star. You can probably find it on YouTube/Google.

On thing people havent brought up: Many, many people have to use the internet in their day job. However, there arent many that have to watch TV.

I go to work and spend 8 hours, most of it on the internet. Even if I get home from work and spend every minute till I go to bed watching TV, I would still watch less TV than internet use.

.... I miss Pandora. That WAS my radio station for ages - and it always plated music I liked and got me into new tunes.

I can't imagine you're going to find anyone on sitepoint who would fit the typical user category.
I'm pretty sure I'm neither a typical computer user nor a typical TV watcher. We don't even have TV at our house, and haven't for years. And we know more and more people who don't have TV.
Why would we pay a large monthly subscription fee to have access to a limited array of programming, most of which is not interesting to us, when we can access the specific shows and movies we want online?
We spend enough on our computers around here, we might as well use them!

I spend more time on the internet watching television than I spend on my couch watching television. That consumes about 1/10th of my total time online.

I wonder what ratio that would be for me, I wouldn't call it watching television online, but I click a LOT of Youtube kind of links. Has to add up to at least an hour a day.

    Definitely it is internet

Definitely it is internet which is much more interesting as well as worthy. You can consider TV almost only when you wants to spend time with your family

at least yee don't have to pay a tv license! @ ~152€/year

which really pisses me off, the money meant to go to national broadcaster like BBC (I love BBC channels tho!) here in Ireland called RTE but instead it goes to pay 400,000€/year wages of stupid presenters, and to get shows like LOST few weeks earlier (even tho anyone with half a brain can find it on net in minutes...), what drives me even more mad is like unlike the BBC they still show ads! even tho we pay for the TV license, argghh!!!

hell i dont even have a TV in the classical box sense, have DLP projector hooked to digital cable receiver and media pc, but lately i spend most of the day working online, no time to sitback and vegetate

Well, everyone in Denmark who has a half-decent Internet connection (more than 128 Kbps) has to pay EUR 300 per year, which goes to our national broadcasting agency. Thus, even if you never watch any of their programs, you still get to pay for their salaries.

    Low cost for TV channels

You guys will be surprised to know here in India we normally pay some around 5 USD monthly to watch 80 to 100 TV channels which includes Star, ESPN, BBC, CNBC, Discovery, National Geography, MTV and many more like this.

A lap top will never replace the big screen HDTV for NBA games. Lets not even go there.
