Exclamation Is the Internet More Popular Than Television?

According to a new study by IDC, consumers spend twice as much time using the internet as watching television. http://xrl.us/bgqbh

But does that really mean that the internet is twice as popular as television? Apparently so. I had never really thought about it before, but you do you see a lot more people carrying around laptops than portable televisions. And because of the nature of my business, I personally spend considerably more time on the internet than watching television - and so does nearly everyone else I know. So the internet gets my vote.

What about you? Do you spend more time on the internet or watching television?

Yes I spend more time on the big I than on the TV. I can find any entertainment I want on the internet, so why bother with TV. I can even multi task - something not available on TV. You either sit and watch and not much else.

I'm still young and not an old fossil as you, so I still enjoy watching TV

sometimes I'm on the internet and watching TV at the same time

But generally I'd say I spend more time on the internet, not counting work hours. Counting work hours it wouldn't even be a contest.

i think it all depends on the age group. for my parents age (retired), i doubt the internet is more popular. but for the other end of the spectrum, it might certainly be...

I rarely watch TV anymore apart from Showtime series. I spend most of my free time on the internet.

I agree with the fact it depends on age group also. Sooner or later it will be everything to everyone.

TV? you mean where I have to wait for my favorite program/movie to air, and watch it all in one go (usually with ads) until it ends? no thanks.

bah you kids didn't have to deal with scrambled analog cable tv body parts

Seriously though, since the writer's strike started I've probably cut my TV watching by 80% or more. It's down to the news and the Simpsons basically. Other shows are coming back but I don't care about following them anymore.

I've spent more time on the net than watching tv for years.

It's definitely the net increasing drastically in accessibility and content. I think tv's been plateaued for quite a while, it's audience hasn't been decreasing.

I don't have a link but I remember reading this years superbowl audience was the second highest tv audience of all time, the first was almost 30 years ago, when the last episode of M.A.S.H. aired.

I guess the Ohio Democratic debate this Tuesday on msnbc had the largest cable audience to date also. I imagine cable viewership is way up from the old networks, I can't say the last time I watched network tv. Only thing I'm missing is 'Lost' I think. House is on fx as well as fox, Heroes on scifi, and Family Guy on the cartoon Network

On a comparison chart of TV and internet...definitely internet. But the factor of generation cannot be washed off. Older people still find TV as their source of media.

    Who can waite

Remember the day when you could watch TV and would only have two commercials every 15 min. of programming. aahhhhhh the good old days!!!!! Now I feel like I will die of old age befor the segment of commercial are over, ohhh then two min of program and another 15 min of commercials. Who has time for this, Not ME. I have a monitor/TV combo, I can listen to any tv program while I am surfing, then I can use the remote and switch to the TV when ever an interesting part of the program catches my interest.
So my comment summary, Get the combo monitor/tv and enjoy the best of both worlds. Thanks

Regardless of what all you people are saying, TV is still very popular at the moment...

I agree that you can find everything you want on the internet but even so, the joy in watching TV surpasses necessity and desire. TV-watching is a sit-back entertainment type and can involve the whole family. The internet cannot acheive that. - It's not like u get the whole famiyl together to gather round a low-quality youtube video on a saturday night?...

A couple of you are complaining about commercials which to be honest are incredibly mundain and annoying but the some of them are actually pretty entertaining. It's only those damn insurance-comparison-site adverts which could make someone suicidal!!! - But seriously some ads are awesome - for example the new citreon ads and that Skoda cake ad (actually most car ads are pretty awesome!).

I turned my TV off several years ago. I just got fed up with all the crap that passes for either news or entertainment these days.

Of course, there are SOME good TV shows. Some day, I hope to get one of those super-sized monitors I see advertised here and there and rig it so I can watch TV and work on my computer at the same time.

I still have rabbit ear antennas on my TV. I think that shows how much I care for it. As I see it, the internet is specific information and entertainment when you request it. With TV, you have to accept whatever is on. Boo.

We pay for a cable subscription here, but usually the only time we watch tv is over breakfast to see the news. This is however, mostly among the tech-savvy (not necessarily geek) crowd. There are lots of people who still choose to sit in front of the TV, as Jun pointed out very well:
