How do open source projects advertise?

Just wondering, how do open source projects like phpbb, joomla, phpnuke, wordpress, oscommerce become so popular? Where and how do they "advertise"?

    Most of it is viral...

Most of the projects have developers that are very dedicated to the projects. They post about it, drumming up excitement, and convince other developers to jump on board.

As the product develops to being usable, they usually get listed in various script directories. As more people experiement with the script, more decide to "buy into" the project and help with development and spread the word. As they request modifications and ask for help on various web boards more people get interested.

Almost all of these scripts require a link back which helps with the SE rankings and awareness. As the project grows, the community base grows, which spreads the word about the product.

You'll see projects advertise at Internet Related Conferences once they get larger. Developers will put on sessions and hold meetups to gain more attention to the project.

The users of the projects find them helpful. That is why they are so popular.
