    Where does XML fit exactly?

    hey there...

I have just recently started to get into PHP and mySQL and all that to use with flash. What I was wondering is, where does XML fit into the equation? If I can get data into and out of flash using PHP what does XML do? as you can tell i know nothing about XML. Any good beginners tutorial suggestions? or better yet book suggestions?

XML essentially does nothing with the data. It merely provides a simple way to format the data so the backend of a web site, or even other applications, have a uniform coding schema to work with. It is then transformed into other forms of data (HTML, for example) via such technologies as XSL that other applications can then use.

One of the best tutorials I've found is located at W3Schools:

    http://www.w3schools.com/xml/
    http://www.w3schools.com/xsl/

W3S does a wonderful job of explaining XML and some of the other technologies associated with it -- a good starting place for anyone to use.

Good luck, see you around the forums.

TopXML is also a good resource. Both articles and code examples are available for many languages.
