My images look weird when uploaded to host

I have just uploaded a test page to my new (free) account at www.portland.co.uk. For some reason my images look very strange (see picture below). I have tried to upload them again but that doesn't help. Is there any explanation for this?

Oh no, not that problem. Marina, I understand how anoying that problem is and I have no idea why it does that. I've seen it on some other servers too, one had transparant GIF's and the backgrounds of those GIF's took random colors.

I always thought it was a problem on the server's side, maybe they're using mod_gzip incorrectly? I have no idea..

Are your images JPG's? If yes, tried making them Progressive Loading yet? Or save them as GIF or vica versa..

Thanks for replying guys. Most of my images are gif's. I think you're right J, this looks like a server side problem. I'll try to contact Portland (they will probably not reply, like all other free hosts, but it's worth a try).

This may be an obviously question, but when you upload them via FTP you should try both ASCII upload and Binary, I forget which one it is, but if you upload it in the wrong one - they look like that.

Thanks iFroggy. I hadn't thought of that actually. I'll try to upload them again. Does anybody know wheather it should be ASCII or binary mode?

Never mind... I've just found the following instructions (thanks to Google, I love it!):

"You should upload your HTML documents in ASCII mode. You should upload your PHP scripts in ASCII mode. Anything that you can view with a text editing program should be transferred in ASCII mode. Binary files, such as gif or jpeg images, zip files, executables, etc should be transferred in BINARY mode."

I'll try to upload the images in binary mode.

(Hi Sean, you're nearly as quick as Google!)

You can upload PHP scripts and HTML pages in binary. Naughty Mr Google!

Try changing the names of the graphics

Some servers block certain names as they are related to certain virus attacks and stop the file being called.

If you try changing the names it might work, let us know how it went.

Changing the names didn't help... I've changed the host instead and now the GIF images look great and there are no broken links. When I uploaded a picture of me, however, I got a splash of red paint in the face... Very strange...
