Is a blog better than a plain website for SEO?

Just curious if you think wordpress is really preferable (SEO-wise) to say just updating a site with Dreamweaver every few days?

I want a blog, but the templates seem like a bit of a hassle to get just right...am wondering if the SEO benefits would make it worth it or not?

Blogs do not rank any better than web sites, this is a myth in the SEO field. Wordpress actually has a duplicate content issue, you can find your content on 4-5 different URLs on your blog, which is considered duplicate content. Correct usage of robots.txt and robots meta tags can be used to correct this. There is no SEO value difference between blogs or regular static\dynamic websites.

A blog can be well SEO with a few optimisations (url rewritting, pluggins for meta, fixes of duplicate content issue).
The major advantage of a blog is the easy way you update your content online.

How your site is built is irrelevant. You could create an exact replica of a WordPress site in a text editor if you wanted to and it would look identical to a search engine in every respect. WordPress is simply a tool to create the site, just as a text editor like Dreamweaver is. However most bloggers find that WordPress is a lot easier to create the same thing than having to mess around with a text editor for each tiny alteration to their blog and some features which would require a LOT of work to make work in a text editor are available straight out of the box from a basic WordPress install.

I would sa "yes" to someone who is not good in managing web site. If you are newbie in marketing it is better to use software that has some SEO optimization - Wordpress, b2Evolution and etc. If you are good in SEO and marketing you can work on your onwe site optimization strategy!

I think yes, because the content are updated regularly and most recent post appear on very first page.

As ssandecki said, WordPress has NO advantage over a static site. It's all about how you develop the site, the quality and relevance of the content, how often the site gets updated, and how well you promote it.

It doesn't have to be a blog to do that. The format of the content is irrelevant. It's the content, usability, and accessibility that matters.

... it will have no advantage over any other web site that is regularly updated and promoted. And regular updates don't necessarily lead to higher rankings.
