    Help with getting started

    Hi, i just bought this book - the ROR Lenz book.

    I have a macbook with leopard 10.5.1 - so my ruby and rails is updated past the book versions... ok, but I'm trying to download the mysql and for the life of me, i can't find the standard dmg file... i have found a community download 5.0.45 but its a tar.gz ?????? what do i do with this, and is this the right path?

    Help - I'd like to get started with learning

    mike

    Try Here:
    You'll have to get the OSX 10.4 version though, I cant find one for 10.5

    If you give someone a program,
    you will frustrate them for a day;
    if you teach them how to program,
    you will frustrate them for a lifetime.

    thanks but a little more help????

    Hey, thanks for the forum help. i have another question though. I've gone to the link you specified to download the .dmg file for mysql, however having installed the x86 version (im on an intel mac) i can't get any further with the ruby book, specifically to test that i have mysql or to log in..

    here's what the book says...
    in terminal
    $ sudo /usr/local/bin/mysqld_safe5
    --- i get a password prompt then --- command not found

    i then read down the sitepoint forum and found a helpful(?) prompt..

    sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql -u root -p

    ---i enter this and get a password prompt but then this returns....

    error 1045 (28000): access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

    sorry to be a boon, but im really excited about learning ruby and this just sux so far..
