    Pages with duplicate meta descriptions

I am using google's webmaster tools I get the message that I have 8 pages with Pages with duplicate meta descriptions. Does anyone know how I can figure out which ones I have duplicate meta descriptions. Google doesnt give me the exact pages.

    Thanks
    Brian

They do list them. Just click on the text and it will expand and list the pages.

It's easy to miss. It isn't even close to being obvious.

I just discovered the same thing today on Google Webmaster. I have the same meta descriptions on every page. All my meta keywords are different for each page, but not my descriptions. I was trying to search Sitepoint a bit ago but it was moving real slow... I came across this thread via a Google search.

Should one write a different description for each page? Can you be penalized by Google for having duplicate meta descriptions?

You should have a different meta description for each page as they may be used in the SERPS as the page's description. If they all have the same description the odds are they are ignored and a less favorable snippet is used instead. That may affect your click thru rate.

Thanks for the answers. I was able to search Sitepoint and saw that indeed, different meta descriptions are necessary. Now, I'm off to write descriptions...
