    Good, customizable php e-commerce package?

    Hello,
I build database sites in PHP and MySQL. I've built a shopping cart before, but I would rather use a third party e-commerce system, if i can find a good one that I can completely integrate with my html front end.
any recommendations? Free solutions? Solutions that cost a little dough?
    Thanks!

I'd suggest these to look at to see if anything fits your needs...

    JShop
    Viart
    Sunshop
    X-cart
    Avactis
    Squirrelcart
    Pinnaclecart
    Digishop

And some free ones... OSCommerce, Zencart

Avactis is what comes to mind with your requirements. You can build the website however you want and the cart integrates into it, not the other way around as so many other carts are.

Thanks guys, I'll look into all of those. Flexibility to customize the layout is my highest priority... on first quick look it seems maybe Squirrel Cart, and as you said, Zen cart, might be good... I'll do more research and post my findings. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Please check out Avactis. It is a super great shopping cart. I think you will find Avactis a breeze to integrate with your design with a little learning curve. If you are serious about catalog-type e-commerce sites, I highly recommend giving Avactis a spin.

Since easiness of editing layout is important for you i would recommend to check http://litecommerce.com shopping cart.

It also has 'checkout' or something mode, when you can leave your site as it is and add 'cart' functionality to your site.

It may suit you actually I believe ...

Yes, I agree, litecommerce is cool in terms of design customization, even using external editors is possible.
