What is too deep to place articles

Or does it matter to Google how far ti has to click down to get to your content.

I'm creating a new article system, and so far it is looking like each article will be 3 clicks deep. I got the Article button, then the category, and then the list of all the articles.

Of course I will be showing snippets of my really good articles on the front page and Article page with links that go directly to the article.

I just was not sure if anyone has ever tested or played around with having article closer to the main page?

Any thoughts on this. My initial thoughts would say that google will not care how deep the articles are on the site.

If there are external incoming links directly to the page it doesn't matter how deep it is, it'll still be found and without those links it doesn't have much chance of ranking well anyway if it's not the same content context as the rest of the site.

If you've got snippets on the index page going straight to the article pages, they'll get indexed no problem assuming they don't break any rules.

Never thought of this before, but will there be any duplicate content issues by serving the first few sentances of an article on another page on my site?

I seriously doubt it. Common sense would say not.

I agree it shouldn't make any difference but for the sake of good writing the first few sentances on a summary page shouldn't match word for word - I would recommend writing a short precis of the article instead.

I think you also need to think from the user point of view. Where are most of your users landing, and how far is it from that point to what they are looking for ?

    Good point.

I never have any part of a site be more than 3 clicks away from any other part of the site. It's basic usability.

That shouldn't be an issue. Having direct links to some of the selected articles will help. Google is unilkey to index most of your content if it is buried in directory strurcture. External or internal links directly to artilces will help.
