Any harm in pinging multiple times?

Is it a negative or spammy to ping through the individual sites and through aggregators like pingoat or pingomatic? It seems that I would be double pinging a number of services.

Or maybe another way to ask... is it okay to simply cut-and-paste the entire list of ping found on the Wordpress Update Services list and not worry if there is an overlap?

I personally just ping through pingomatic. It pings the major players.

If you ping too often then you will eventually be flagged as a spammer. Pinging each service once when an entry goes live is probably safest and is certainly all that is needed.

felgall is spot on. Keep it to once per post and no more than that. You will do yourself more harm than good otherwise.

Pinging should be better only after new post, not frequently.

I think theres no problem with pinging new post but pinging old post would be a waste of time imho.

Maintain a good reputation with ping services. They are very helpful to your seo campaign.

i believe there is not only you will flagged as spammer but you also alert some spam blog makers to copy your content. the best way you can do whenever you got new posts is to submit it to social bookmarking sites ASAP and it somewhat got the same results as using pinging services in your blog

I suppose it depends on how big the overlap is can you not leave out the ones you would be double pinging if you are using pingoat or pingomatic?

I don't fully understand the answer, and I wondered about this, too, so let me ask it a different way (bear with me): So if I have Wordpress set up to automatically ping a list of services, I don't need to (and shouldn't) ping manually when I update content?
