    Why?

Why are my forums not popular?
16 members - 5-6 active posters (the rest have registered and never come back)
Is it because of the colours?
Is it because of the name?
Is it because i don't update my site every day?
Is it because there are quadzillions of other forums out there?

I thought i'd ask you people seen as .............well....................... i just want to know.

Well, I was able to get through about two hours after the previous posters.

Anyway, I think it's really tough to tell why a particular forum isn't popular. If anything, I think it may be your promotional strategy (which I don't know, so this is just a guess), but the points you raised may play a part how ever small. The biggest thing though is that I don't think your separating yourself from the pack (and that would have to due with your promotional efforts and your competition). Work on your strategy for building up the forums as a product, and, once you feel that you have something competitive, then work on really hard on promoting it.

    Best of luck! :-)

Reasons why your site is unpopular...
    *Not available at all times.
*subject is quite common on the internet and is very broad (games, cars, websites).
*address is too long to manually type
*YOU have to participate in the forums a lot. You have to try and reply to as many posts as possible, and try and read every single one when you start your board.
*Forum isn't exactly aesthetically pleasing...not much customisation, color scheme is weird...
*I personally think that ikonboard is terrible...
*PROMOTE your forums...put a big visible link on your main page, and put the forums in your signature on emails, message boards, etc.

Is there a better free website hosting place than Netfirms?

And if someone wants to change the colours/design etc. in the board, then let me know, as i'm not too fond of the colours either.

    Promotion

I have to agree with Ian and Djhk.

According to your numbers, 16 members, 5-6 active, that means you have about 40% of people who register are remaining active. I think that that is a pretty good number. Certainly nothing to sneeze at.

What do you do to promote your forum? We might be able to help with even more ideas than have already been given. And by the way, everythinng Ian and DJHK have said is good solid advice.

am i the only one here that thought the colour scheme was bad? i mean the front page is to dark and the text is to hard to read, also just to read the thread topics you need to click twice,

Apart from that, the fact that your forums are multi topic, (cars and games) isnt going to help you, what does one have to do with the other (unless talking about car games)

Try changing the colours and think about droping one of the topics and focusing on that..

I agree with what's been said above. I didn't have any trouble accessing it (maybe I was lucky), but I really had a problem with the colors. It would tire my eyes very fast to read stuff in there. Also, your subjects really aren't specific enough to gather atention and interest of a broad audience. I think you need to redefine the whole thing a little more tightly.

I would change the name of your forum. Mustang-man's Forum is the same as Johnny's Forums, which isn't a good thing. Like others have said, your color scheme needs some work. You have red in your logo - but where is the red in the color scheme? Then you have that purple, which doesn't look good on black in the first place, where is that in your logo? You need to have everything more coordinated together so it doesn't look like you threw it together in different parts.

And another thing is I recommend getting a easy-to-remember domain anme with a reliable host (VenturesOnline is my favorite). No one will return if they come back and see a big error or the site doesn't load. That's one of the first things you should do to assure success, marketing-wise...

Also, you can't really expect to have a real popular forum on free hosting, because that eats up a LOT of bandwidth...and that's why some hosting companies ban some boards from being run...

And for the color scheme, try and use this...

    Thanks people.

I agree. The colours are very ugly and i don't really want them like that.
But as i don't know what i am doing i don't want to change all the colours around incase i bugger it up.

Would anyone here like to give it a go?
You can customise it as much as you want (e.g. new buttons etc.) and i'll help as much as i can.

And as for the boring topic issue, someone else might have to register and post non-boring topics, as i can never think of anything worth talking about.

And i don't have a job, so there is no way i can afford a domain name etc.

Does anyone want to have a crack at re-designing the forums?

You might try posting in The Trading Post here in the SitePoint Marketplace. You'll likely need to offer some incentive to people, though. You can also find button sets if you search the web, they're out there.

As for the boring posts issue - here's an idea. Register a few different names to get started off and if you can't think of any ideas yourself, take ones you find here at SitePoint and (not copy them, just the idea) create an interesting conversation.
