Bookmark services on blogs: Good idea or bad?

I came across two sites that discussed this topic:

    http://www.cre8d-design.com/blog/200...-blog-clutter/
    http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000587.html

    What do you think?

I don't use bookmark services to begin with. I do agree that many people will decide for themselves if your content is worth adding or not & won't add just because you linked such service on your site.

Your visitors can be broken up into three groups.

    1. Those who will not bookmark your site regardless (the biggest group)
    2. Those who will bookmark your site but only if there is a link for them to click on to do it (the next biggest group)
    3. Those who will bookmark your site regardless (the smallest group).

The question you need to answer is whether you want to push those in group 2 into group 1 by not providing the appropriate link.

There's a new bookmarking site I've started using called BloggingZoom which is designed around the blogger adding their own link. This can work pretty well as it attracts other bloggers to your site who are more likely to be a part of either group 2 or 3.

Another benefit of using a social bookmarking plugin is that in several of them you can give your readers options of where to bookmark your site. So if you're an active at a certain bookmarking service, you can find visitors who have "joined your community" and more easily reciprocate or at least deliver a "thank-you", both of which lead to more visits to your site.

It's difficult to predict people's reaction to a blog. You will never know whether or not they bookmark your post.

I think bookmarks can work pretty well. Even if only a few people bookmark it, the bookmark can get ranked

Overall it depends on the content, if it is really appealing people will go on bookmarking.

If your content is useful, then a bookmark icon is highly recommended
