Best way to promote/monetize a very niche website

I run the largest fansite in the world for the indie band Interpol, and would really like to see more of a profit for my hard work. I currently run adsense, but this produces pretty damn poor revenue. I have a feeling that this is largely down to a shortage of ads for my niche, after all the website itself isn't as broad as for example 'music', focusing entirely on one band.

It brings in pretty decent traffic (250-400 uniques per day) and around 100 return visits, yet my earnings do not reflect this.

I was wondering what might be a good way to properly monetize this website. I was thinking perhaps some affliate program selling the bands cds? (although most of my visitors would already own all of their albums).

Also in terms of promotion what do you think might be the most effective strategy? Facebook seems like a good option, as I can target around 100,000 fans of the band, however I haven't heard a lot about this medium of advertising yet.

    Any help is much appreciated

    Thanks.

Adsense code will do it's very best to give relevant ads, depending on your sites content. If the ads being displayed are not relevant, then there are just no relevant advertisers out there. It is in Google's best interest to provide you with the most relevant ads.

I for one completely block out adsense text ads. Why not try the image version? And how much have you thought about ad placement?

Yeah I might go for just images, although I don't want to limit my advertisers even more. And yeah, my placement is good I think.

Well, I'm pretty sure Adsense is the largest network, so if your not having luck with them, it might not be the ads themselves.

Could we have a link to the site please?

Another ad network I have always liked is AdBrite.

Yeah, I would say replace the top text links with a banner.

Also, each page is quite long, and you have lots of space in the far right grey area for affiliate advertising.

unfortunately you don't have the traffic to make a lot off banner ads and goggle adsense may not be a good fit because of the ads it would show. If I was you I would focus on getting more traffic... create places where your users can create the content for you. Take a look at what the other large fan sites are doing to get traffic.

Once you get the traffic banners are probably your best bet. Unless you can find a good affiliate program that converts.... something related to music.

Well the thing is that I'm the largest fansite out there for this band, and have pretty much pushed my niche to the limit (at least until the band release their next album - when I expect traffic to grow again).

I also have users writing content for the last couple of days, so I guess this may see a boost in traffic.

Perhaps try amazon affiliate with links to their records, etc. iTunes also has an affiliate program.
