    Hello,

I am considering buy a site, so I would like to know if the change of ownership could have any impact on this site's rankings at Google.

    Of course not.

As long as you don't take the site down, or alter it in any large way, it will have no affect whatsoever.

I'm finding it hard to fathom how this would be possibel!

    Various factors.

Do they have paid listings at the moment? If so, you would need to pay yourself to keep those going (I'm talking adwords).

It is also possible that the site in question has ongoing linking relationships with industry partners which may or may not be affected by the sale. It is worth investigating any such relationships (google: link:www.site.com) to see, and asking the current site owner.

Other than that, only major changes to the content, or downtime would be concerns.

Just wanted to add one thing, instead of using google, use yahoo to check the backlinks, google will only show a handful of backlinks. Yahoo shows almost all backlinks a site has. Other than that the point is absolutely valid and worth considering before purchasing a site.
