A script to check for Last-Modified dates

Instead of remembering to visit the same page on 10 different websites to see if it has changed in any way (ie the content), can I write a CRON that will go to each of those pages on each of those sites and compare it's last-modifed date with the one I have? ...and if it's newer then, I know to visit the page.

None of the pages have RSS feeds.

I can code PHP but wouldn't know where to start on this project.

The PHP documentation for filemtime() has a few user contributed examples that use the HTTP last-modified header. You could do something with them using a CRON to check database values and mail() you.
