I think the simplicity or extravagance of a logo depends on the product or service that you'll be marketing. But if you want a professional looking one, it should be simple.

I have always believed in simple logos!
Non of these rules are cut in stone and they are not laws. How you represent something is obviously up to you. You can take that simple chair and put it on a simple background, that is just fine. You can also put it on a complex background. Complex does not mean wild by any stretch of the imagination really. You misinterpreted the term complex. Complex can be patterns in a monochrome, complex can be a landscape of any kind, complex can be also a wild graphic or a background of graffiti or a photo of a bunch of people.
Now, if you have on object that is complex as in a rendering of a structure with many beams or a logo that has a lot of little detail within it, then you do not want to set it on a background that is also complex as it, that would confuse the visibility of it.
The principle therefore is:
Complex (should be) on simple
Simple on complex
Those two guidelines make for interesting and readable images.
Sorry, but I completely disagree. It's surely got to be down to relevance. For me, the design should always come from the concept or idea you've had. And really, I think if there's any rule at all it should be - everything should be simple. But then I'm from the Pentagram school of thought as oppose to the 'Vault 48' one. Maybe I'm just getting old.
Of course you can disagree, but disagreeing does not change the fact of how the human eye sees things
If you want the world to be simple, so create all things simple, I said nothing against that. I for one love thinks in contrast, simple and complex, both have their place.
