A theoretical question on exchanging links

Suppose there exists a site with exactly equivalent actual PR value as yours, with the same number of outbound links. If you exchange links with it, do you gain any benefit PR wise? (Just a question limited to PR. I know PR isn't everything, and that if the site is related it's actually beneficial, and also helps for anchor weight)

Another question, why would I exchange links with a related site, with a PR much lower than mine?.

It depends on the linking sructure.

Adding one more outbound link to a page reduces the amount of PR distributed by that page within your own network of internal pages (but by how much). Because of this, the amount of PR passed back to that page by those other internal pages is reduced. But that loss is offset by the extra PR passed to that page by this new link exchange.

I think that on average you would gain more than you lose.

Given that PR was exactly equal and the linking structure was identical (i.e. same amount of outbound and inbound links both internally and externally) then I'd have thought that there would be no effect from doing this?

Obviously there's no way to determine that PR is exactly the same given that the green bar is a rounded number so I'd guess that you could lose out just as easily as you could gain so would be pointless doing... especially considering you could get involved with a link farm and find your site penalized.

Okhay, just a follow up. Also updated the original post.

Why would I exchange links with a related site, with a PR much lower than mine?

You probably shouldn't if it's for seo reasons.

If it's because users on their site may find your content useful and users of your site will find their content useful then you might consider it but from a purely seo perspective then it will have no benefits.
