    Problem installing Ruby.

    Hi,

I got a problem when I tried installing Ruby in Linux(Ubuntu)

When I execute the command I got the following err.
    sudo apt-get -f install ruby irb rdoc libruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev

    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
build-essential: Depends: libc6-dev but it is not going to be installed or
    libc-dev
Depends: g++ (>= 4:4.0) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: dpkg-dev (>= 1.13.5) but it is not going to be installed
g++-2.95: Depends: gcc-2.95 (>= 1:2.95.4) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gcc-2.95 (< 1:2.95.5) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libstdc++2.10-dev (>= 1:2.95.4) but it is not going to be installed
gcc: Depends: gcc-4.0 (>= 4.0.3) but it is not going to be installed
irb: Depends: irb1.8 but it is not going to be installed
rdoc: Depends: rdoc1.8 but it is not going to be installed
ruby: Depends: ruby1.8 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

Then I followed a different approach given in this PDF

When i try to execute ./configure I got the following err.

    checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
    checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
    checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
    checking for gcc... no
    checking for cc... no
    checking for cl.exe... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
    See `config.log' for more details.

I googled to solve the problem and in the ubuntu forum they suggested to install g++ package. So i downloaded g++ package and when I install g++ it prompted me to install gcc. When i try to install it throws some other err. Check out the below logs for more details.

    naveen$ sudo dpkg -i gcc_4.0.3-1_i386.deb

Can anyone help me to solve this problem. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Naveen

Before running that apt-get line, install the build-essential package:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install build-essential
