Paid Reviews - Can they hurt?

Advertorials do very well for my company, so we are looking into the paid review world. We would be doing this for the reviews - not for the links.

Do we run the risk of being categorized as "link buyers" by getting involved with this? We'd be happy to use no follows if that would help. I know some say you can't be penalized for incoming links (otherwise you could kill your competitors by buying links) but I'm not 100% sold on that theory.

    Any thoughts?

If you nofollow them there is really no reason for the big G to punish you.

With that said, Google seems to be more interested in penalizing the link sellers than the link buyers anyway.

As long as you dont link back you will be fine. No way google can penalise incoming links. At worst google will give them no value. As you said competitors would be buying reviews in a flash if it affected your rankings.

Selling paid links may hurt your rankings or pr.

It's possible that you are penalized for buying links but the chances of it happening are remote.

Only the selling site is penalized.

If you get thousands of links at the same time Google may penalize you.

I think in some cases if there is clearly an elaborate plan to get links on a large scale, it can hurt the site receiving the links, but this would be rare.
