How to raise page view per visitor.

    Hi all,
I have a problem with my low page view per visitor ratio at http://www.flashninjaclan.com ,an online games site. It gets about 2.5 pageviews per visitor currently.

I've been looking around and sites like http://www.bootyarcade.com and http://www.bumarcade.com have like 4-5 page views per visitor. I don't see how a layout like bootyarcade's is better than mine and why it would encourage more visitors, anyone have any ideas?

Where did you get these numbers from? And bootyarcade.com doesn't seem to work?

Have you try'd a slightly different layout, move a couple of things around on your page. If you compare the layout from bumarcade to your site, you'll see its a bit more (not sure if its the right word) organized. You have got some big spaces between some of the items, and not everything is aligned that well at the bottom.

That doesn't always have to be a big issue. But just compare how things are aligned and spaced at the bumarcade site with your site. That makes it more pleasant for the eye, and can make people stay a bit longer on your site.

Well, then if booty arcade doesn't work, try yogames.net , it also gets like 4 or more per day and it doesn't have too much of a design at all. I'll see what I can do about the spaces.

I think yogames.net has the same things that the other ones got, its just a bit more organized. Its not about the design, its how you organize the content.

Removed the extra space and evened out the alignment on my game panels.

I think you should give it a bit more time, like a couple of days instead of just 1.

The other thing to check is where your visitors are coming from. I had some completely unrelated visitors spike my sites stats for a month but pageviews dropped dramatically. If say you have some unrelated vistors that your competitors dont this can definately have an effect on average page views.

    And be patient

I'd agree with looking at your visitor stats first. When we hit front page of D{i}gg, we know there's not going to be great page views compared to say hitting the front of del-icio-us where page views are significantly higher. You've just got to look out for different behavioral patterns.

I also noticed that your links have a very subtle color change on mouse over. You might want to emphasize the color change (maybe bold) to make it feel more actionable. Maybe even test good old underlining.

Thirdly the way the page loaded in Firefox was weird. It was very difficult to read the text until the whole page loaded ( white table backgrounds I think). Once it was cached it was fine but just that initial load -- If your getting good search traffic and a significant representation of Firefox browsers you might want to take a look at that.

Just a few Ideas - make sure you A/B test so you know what difference it's making.

Vistor stats should tell you what terms they used to find site. If they did not use search term related to topic they will not stick around very long. I would keep site as is right now and check stats for a few weeks and see if they improve with new design or layout.

I may pay someone to re-draw the design in CSS rather than tables.

What's the update on your site Archbob? Any significant number of visitors?

I guess some of the advices here are really good but implementing them is not so easy for me to even think about it. But it is really good to know what kind of visitors you are having. Are they just visitors or probable customers? Now knowing that would be a great help to you but knowing it is the hard part.
