    After HTML what should be my next step in the learning process - ASP or Javascript?

    i would suggest javascript since it's a client side scripting technique and since it can be used in ASP. ASP isn't actually a language in the litteral sense. it uses VB Script or Java to do certin things. so got for the Javascript, or Perl, or VB Script or PHP3

    I too recommend learning javascript and/or vbscript next. Both of these are easy to learn and will provide a foundation for learning the more advanced languages and technologies later. Also since both are client side you can test your work directly on your workstation without network access of any kind. After that you can start learning the server side technologies which involve either a loop of develop, upload, test or installing server software and addons directly on your workstation.
